Sfogliatelle (“Lobster Tail”)

Sometimes when you are in a rush to gift someone something sweet, you might have to resort to your local or favorite bakeries.  There was one afternoon while I was strolling in my neighborhood, I spotted an Italian bakery and decided to walk in. Hmm…bad idea. It is not the most authentic pastry shop, but there was a decent selection of Italian goodness, such as fruit tarts, cookies by the pound and of course, the famous tiramisu.  But I wanted to try something different and long and behold, the name “lobster tail” (sfogliatelle) piqued my curiosity.  The pastry resembles, well, a lobster tail  (really a ricotta fritter) dusted with powdered sugar over its rippled crustancean sections.  The 3-dimensional texture was so appealing, I had to purchase one, even just to take a photo of it!

My mom enjoyed it.  Perhaps a bit too much ricotta for her, but you would not want a piece of lobster with no ‘meat’, right?
